आधी अंडे का कोंबडी ?

अमेरिकेची सुधारण्याची किंवा बदलण्याची काही लक्षणे दिसत नाहीत. ह्या आठवडयात आता अंडी बाजारातून मागे घेतली जाताहेत, कारण काय तर साल्मोनेल्लाची त्याला बाधा झालीय व लोक ती खाल्ल्याने आजारी पडताहेत.

एखाद्या विषयाचा काथ्याकूट नाही केला तर मग ती अमेरिका काय म्हणायची ? आता इतक्या साध्या विषयावर उपाय, अपाय वगैरे असे कितीसे असणार असे आपल्याला वाटते न वाटते तोच वर्तमानपत्रांचे रकाने तत्परतेने सांगतात : प्रोपोझिशन-२ अन्वये कोंबडयांची खुराडी मोठी व वातानुकूलित न केल्याने हे दुष्परिणाम होत आहेत. आपल्याकडच्या मनेका गांधी सारख्या एका संस्थेचे ( ह्युमेन ट्रीटमेंट फॉर फार्म अ‍ॅनिमल्स ) म्हणणे असे की कोंबडीला खुराडयात ताणून उभे राहता येऊन, चक्क गिरकी घेता यायला हवी, एवढी प्रशस्त खुराडी हवीत. कोंबड्यांना दाटी झाली की अंडी सुख देणारी होत नाहीत.

आता पोल्ट्रीवाले म्हणतात की एवढे करायचे तर खर्च कोण देणार ? शिवाय ही पहा आमची नवी प्रशस्त वातानुकूलित खुराडी, पण कोंबड्या बघा कशा एकत्र घोळका करून कोपर्‍यात बसताहेत. मग अलीशान खुराड्यांचा काय उपयोग ? आणि सगळ्या जगातल्या कोंबड्यांना कोंडवाडे चालतात, मग आमचीच अंडी दु:खी कशी ? सगळ्या जगाचीच खुराडी मोठी होऊ द्यात, मग आम्ही करू.

काही मनेका गांधी वाले लोक इथे म्हणताहेत की खरे तर कोंबड्यांना मुक्त चरू द्यावे, त्यांना मोकळेच ठेवावे. ह्यावर पोल्ट्रिवाले म्हणतात, अहो अशाने त्या एकमेकांच्या घाणीतून फिरतील व मग त्यांना अ‍ॅंटिबायोटिक्स द्यावे लागेल. ( शिवाय त्यांना पकडणे व अंडी गोळा करणे जिकिरीचे होईल ते वेगळेच ! ).

कदाचित ह्या सगळ्या काथ्याकूटीचा एक रोख असा असावा की कशाची काळजी कशी करावी ह्या व्यूहामध्ये, आधी कोंबडी का आधी अंडे, ह्या व्यूहचक्रामधून सुटण्याचा एकमेव मार्ग, कोंबडी व अंडी खाणेच सोडावे, असा असावा ! थॅंक्स अमेरिका !

Which first, the egg or hen ?

There are no signs that America will ever improve and simplify. Last week, we saw a recall of lot of eggs all over due to Salmanella infection and people falling sick due it.

What is America, if you can't debate the silliest issue to ones heart's desire and unto the last resort ? Newspapers are filling us up with incredible details on this world's primitive riddle," which first egg or hen ?". An NGO similar to what Maneka Gandhi runs in India, one organisation here for humane treatement to farm animals says that hen cages should be air-conditioned and should be large enough. The hen, they say, should be able to stretch inside and also turn around easily. The egg producers counter on this, that who will pay for such cages ? Moreover, see how all the hen are huddling together inspite of the spacious cages. And they also want all the rest of the world to evolve standards for spacious cages and then they will follow the same here.

Some animal lovers go so further as to plead total freedom for hen in the open ( with no cages ). The egg producers have problem on this that the hen will then run into each other's feces and will have to be treated with anti-biotics and this will be more expensive. And of course the egg collection will be quite a task in such a free environment !

Perhaps there is lesson in all this discussion for America and the world apart from the age-old riddle of which first, the egg or the hen ? and that could be that don't eat eggs or hen !
